Do not be fooled: Miles Ahead does not subscribe to the stale biopic formula we’ve seen run into the ground so often. Instead, the new film from Don Cheadle (Boogie Nights, Hotel Rwanda)—in which he pulls double duty as both director and star—offers a wild and intense portrait of the legendary Miles Davis. Set in 1979, at the end of Davis’s five-year “silent period,” and featuring great supporting turns from Emayatzy Corinealdi (The Invitation), Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting), and Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man), Miles Ahead is at once intense drama, heist adventure, and immersive musical experience.
