Menachem Begin: Peace and War

This stunning documentary commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1979 peace treaty between Israel and Egypt delivers a surprising and unfamiliar portrait of Israel’s sixth prime minister. After his 1977 election, Menachem Begin led the country for six dramatic years, a time that produced social and political changes that are still felt deeply today. Facing extraordinary challenges, he made a handful of fateful decisions that led both to creating peace and launching a war. In addition, he was the first prime minister to appoint Mizrahi Jews (from Arab countries) to important political positions, showing respect and appreciation for their cultures. The film interweaves never-before-seen archival footage with contemporary interviews with key figures from Begin’s time as prime minister.

This film is part of the Westchester Jewish Film Festival 2020 series.
