Emergency Puerto Rico Relief: Almost a Woman

Q&A film subject/author Esmeralda Santiago

Almost a Woman, written by founding JBFC board member Esmeralda Santiago and based on her memoir of the same name, takes place in 1961, when Esmeralda moves from rural Puerto Rico to New York City with her mother and six siblings. At thirteen, Esmeralda is the oldest child, shouldering the responsibilities of learning English and serving as her mother’s interpreter and guide through the challenges of their new life in America. As a new immigrant, she suffers an identity crisis and, in her mother’s eyes, she’s also casi una mujer—almost a woman—an uncertain status that requires Mami’s constant vigilance. The film won a Peabody Award for PBS Masterpiece Theatre’s “American Collection.”
