Winner, Best Director (Un Certain Regard), 2016 Cannes Film Festival
The second feature from the multi-talented actor, writer, and director Matt Ross (American Psycho, HBO’s Silicon Valley), Captain Fantastic is the story of Ben (an exceptional Viggo Mortensen, Eastern Promises), an intelligent, off-beat guy, who lives completely isolated with his six children in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. But after a decade in their self-made paradise, the family’s unconventional way of life is suddenly disrupted when Ben learns of his wife Leslie’s tragic death. Determined to attend her funeral in New Mexico—an event they have been explicitly banned from by Leslie’s father (a superb-as-always Frank Langella, Starting Out in the Evening)—Ben and his children embark on a difficult road trip that forces them to re-enter a society that challenges their idea of what it means to be a family, and what it means to live a life. Featuring great supporting turns from Kathryn Hahn, Missi Pyle, Steve Zahn, and the six incredible young actors playing Ben’s children, Captain Fantastic is a hopeful family drama, a stunning showcase for Mortensen’s endless talent, and a movie that has the film world abuzz about what Matt Ross will do next.
