After the Storm

“After the Storm is one of the director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s sturdiest, and most sensitive, constructions.” (New York Times)

Years ago a man named Ryota (Hiroshi Abe, Still Walking) had a successful career as an award-winning author, but these days he works as a private detective and spends much of his salary on gambling. After the death of his father, Ryota attempts to reconnect with his aging mother (Kirin Kiki, Our Little Sister, Sweet Bean) and his ex-wife (Yōko Maki, Like Father, Like Son) but they seem to be moving on with their lives and are initially distrusting. When their sleepy town is hit by a typhoon, Ryota uses the storm as an opportunity to trap his mother, wife, and his estranged preteen son together in an attempt reclaim a lasting place in the family. Acclaimed director Hirokazu Koreeda (Still Walking, Like Father, Like Son) returns with a deceptively quiet film, one that is, “funny, accessible, and as immense in feeling as it is small in scale.” (IndieWire)
