Affliction

Everything goes wrong for Wade Whitehouse (Nick Nolte, in an Academy Award–nominated performance), a divorced New Hampshire police officer who misses his daughter (Brigid Tierney) and has had to suffer years of abuse from his father (James Coburn, who won an Academy Award for this role). His life and connections—even his new relationship with a kind-hearted woman (Sissy Spacek)—are eroding. And then he latches onto a recent police case: While everyone else agrees that a hunter unintentionally shot and killed himself, Wade begins to obsessively investigate, his life disintegrating as his paranoia steers him toward tragedy. Adapted from the masterly Russell Banks novel of the same name, this painfully chilling but deeply profound portrait of a wounded man will stay with you.
