In 1979 Santa Barbara, California, Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right) is a divorced woman raising her teenage son, Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann), at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. A single mother in her mid-50s, Dorothea enlists the help and influence of two younger women—Abbie (Greta Gerwig, Maggie’s Plan), a free-spirited punk artist living as a boarder in the Fields’s home, and Julie (Elle Fanning, The Neon Demon), a shrewd, often provocative teenage neighbor—to help with his upbringing. Director Mike Mills (whose previous feature, Beginners, won Christopher Plummer a supporting actor Oscar) continues his experiments with memoir, this time offering a whimsical, nostalgia-fueled tribute to the women who raised him.
