Director of Human Resources

The Jacob Burns Film Center is a nonprofit cultural and educational institution located in Pleasantville, NY, whose mission is dedicated to presenting the best of independent, documentary, and world cinema, promoting visual literacy, and making film a vibrant part of the community. The JBFC is committed to recruiting and retaining a diverse team and is working to further the goals of diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism at all levels. We are seeking a Director of Human Resources to support the organization.

The Director of Human Resources (D/HR) manages the day-to-day operations of the Human Resource function, coaches managers/directors, and advises the organization on HR issues. Along with a part time Office Manager/Human Resources Coordinator, the Director of Human Resources manages the administration and coordination of human resources policies, procedures, and programs for the organization.

The D/HR carries out responsibilities in the following functional areas: recruitment and onboarding, employee relations and compliance, training and development, benefits, compensation, performance management and organizational development, and organizational culture.

The D/HR identifies opportunities to enable the JBFC to be an open and forward-looking employer. They serve as an advisor to the Board and the senior staff, anticipating HR issues and helping to guide the organization. They will serve as liaison to the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, supporting all efforts to increase representation at all levels of the organization.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The HR Director is responsible for the development and administration of programs, procedures, and guidelines to help align the workforce with the strategic goals of the organization by:

 

Recruitment and Onboarding

  • Partner with senior management in recruitment of full-time and part-time employees, including exempt, nonexempt, and seasonal staff; identify new candidate pipelines with a goal to attract diverse talent to the JBFC
  • Manage onboarding process including facilitation of employee orientation; coordinate with Manager of Theater Operations on PT theater staff onboarding

 

Employee Relations and Compliance

  • Keep up to date on compliance/regulatory concerns and reporting requirements: implement necessary changes to protect the interests of employees and the organization
  • Assist with employee communication of HR procedures and policies and annual compliance/training notices and training employees on new and updated policies
  • Assist with policy development and documentation; update Employee handbook as necessary
  • Serve as trusted sounding board to hear, vet, and navigate tough HR issues
  • Manage employee relations process and know when to involve the Executive Director, HR Consultant, or Counsel
  • Draft performance improvement plans when necessary
  • Coach managers/directors on working with employees as issues/conflicts arise

 

Training and Development

  • Develop training and coach managers/directors on giving effective feedback
  • Work with DEI Committee and external HR/DEI consultants to implement Anti-Harassment and Respect in the Workplace training for both employees and management
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to create and manage safety, welfare, wellness, health, and financial education programs
  • Manage Professional Development program, including staff applications and budget

 

Benefits

  • Develop and schedule annual benefit orientations and trainings, as well as when needed throughout the year
  • Manage the annual renewal and open enrollment process
  • Administer the 403(b) plan and complete yearly compliance reporting
  • Manage disability and worker’s compensation claims process
  • Assist with benefits administration and claims resolutions
  • Recommend changes in benefits offered, especially new benefits aimed at employee satisfaction and retention

 

Compensation

  • Assist with the monitoring of the organizational wage and salary structure
  • Provide competitive market research and prepare pay studies to help establish pay practices and pay bands that help to recruit and retain staff
  • Partner with accounting and payroll to maintain the payroll database
  • Participate in annually updating job descriptions and create new ones as needed

 

Performance Management & Organizational Development

  • Manage the performance review process; recommend and implement upgrade/improvements to process where applicable; facilitate training for managers/directors on giving effective feedback
  • Work with management to identify key talent, discuss career paths, and implement structural changes as business needs require

 

Organizational Culture

  • Serve as thought partner to Executive Director on issues of organizational culture and change
  • Recommend and implement programs to pull together office and theatre staff to promote a consistent culture across the organization
  • Continually monitor the organization’s culture to ensure it supports the attainment of the organization’s strategic goals and promotes employee satisfaction and retention
  • Initiate and implement, coordinating with senior management, to manage employee celebrations such as Staff Appreciation Events to drive engagement and bonding between employees

 

Other duties and responsibilities

  • Attend HR meetings, seminars and training; network with other HR professionals in the area in similar industries
  • Assist operations with organizational and space planning and new hire set up
  • Assist in creating and monitoring of an annual HR budget
  • Coordinate with payroll system to maintain HR records
  • Supervise the Office Manager/Human Resources Coordinator (in conjunction with General Manager)
  • Update the Board on relevant HR issues when necessary

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors/Master’s degree in field related to Human Resources
  • 5+ years of Human Resources experience at the Manager or Director level, including supervision of staff
  • Nonprofit and/or arts/cultural organization experience
  • Knowledge of NYS and federal employment law
  • Significant and demonstrable experience in employee relations, conflict resolution, and talent management
  • Commitment to DEI and experience administering and implementing organizational DEI initiatives
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication (oral and written), and active listening skills
  • Ability to connect and work effectively with junior staff, senior management, and Board

 

The position requires a Monday-Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm work schedule with remote flexibility as necessary and appropriate.

Start date: ASAP

Salary range: $85,000-$95,000
