Grades 7 & 8
Cinemania gives young
movie buffs the opportunity to explore through film the experience
of childhood in all corners of the globe. This ten-week after-school
program offers weekly meetings that include a movie screening, an
interactive discussion, and writing and reading film reviews. Students
assist in the presentation of special community events, such as
Movie Crafts for Kids and Cinemania Bash.
Under
the guidance of Vicente
Rodriguez Ortega, Cinemania
nurtures an appreciation for the cinema arts, provides an introduction
to visual literacy, fosters self-expression, and expands students'
worldview. All students receive a free student membership to the
JBFC and a Cinemania notebook.
Our goals
are to help seventh and eighth grade students:
• understand the language of film, including cinematography,
editing, lighting, framing, and point of view.
• reflect upon the adolescent experience and explore their
own identity through characters and stories that relate to their
lives.
• form and articulate educated opinions about the movies they
see.
• become more active viewers of visual media.
Cinemania provides
opportunities for seventh and eighth grade students to:
• learn about worlds and cultures other than their own by
screening films from other countries.
• form friendships with like-minded students from other area
middle schools
• contribute to their community through volunteer opportunities.

CLASSROOM TO SCREENING ROOM
Grades 5 to 12

Classroom to Screening Room is
an opportunity for middle and high school students to watch films
that enhance their study of literature, social studies, science,
foreign languages, and the visual and performing arts. Incorporating
the study of moving images into the core curriculum extends the
learning process beyond the classroom while working toward the
goals designated for each grade level and subject area.
Guest speakers
and filmmakers, as well as presentations and discussions facilitated
by JBFC educators, make this program
unforgettable. The major components to the Classroom
to Screening Room curriculum include: Visual and
Film Literacy Presentation; Essential Cinema; JBFC Programming;
Documentaries and Historical Features; Literary Adaptations; and
Foreign Films.
Our goal is to help middle and high school students:
• understand the language of film, including cinematography, editing, lighting,
framing, and point of view.
• apply this understanding to the reading and analysis of documentaries
and narrative films.
• learn about the influential movements of film history.
• become more active viewers of visual media.
Classroom to Screening Room provides
opportunities for middle and high school students to:
• experience foreign languages and cultures in the context of films from
other countries.
• compare written and visual treatments of literary texts.
• enhance the study of historical events and figures through the documentary
genre.
• screen culturally significant current releases.
