Grade 3

SeeHearFeelFilm teaches third grade students critical viewing skills and the techniques of telling a story through film. Using film to spark their own creative expression, the children learn to write with clarity, confidence, and joy, and improve their own storytelling skills. The curriculum consists of viewing short movies from around the world, and participating in writing exercises and creative collaboration. Every student receives a JBFC Film Journal. The curriculum was designed by Anne Marie Santoro.

SeeHearFeelFilm is available as a series of class trips to the Jacob Burns Film Center or as a classroom-based experience. Workshops at the Film Center are led by master teachers Anne Marie Santoro and Barbara DeGeorge with the assistance of trained volunteer educational facilitators.

Our goals are to use short films from around the world to help third grade students:
• become more active viewers of visual media.
• lead more examined lives.
• improve their creative expression and storytelling skills.
• understand how to write with clarity, confidence, and joy.

SeeHearFeelFilm provides opportunities for third grade students to:
• exercise their critical viewing skills and imagination.
• enjoy a variety of films from around the world.
• examine how filmmakers tell stories.
• engage their senses to focus on their inner and outer worlds.
• enliven their creative expression and storytelling skills using the tools of a filmmaker.

Grade 4

Animation: Minds in Motion!, designed by Joseph Summerhays and Anne Marie Santoro, gives fourth grade students the opportunity to explore the world of animation by collaboratively writing, storyboarding, directing, and making their own original short animated films.

Animation: Minds in Motion! is available as two different experiences. Schools that demonstrate financial need are eligible to participate in the animator-in-residency version of the program. A professional animator and a team of trained volunteers visit the classroom for 12 two-hour sessions.  Every student receives a JBFC Production Book and a DVD copy of his/her film. The program culminates in a red carpet world premiere of the films at the Jacob Burns Film Center.

There is also a model of the program that trains fourth grade educators to teach the curriculum in their classroom. Participants attend a four-day training workshop led by Joseph Summerhays and receive a curriculum, technical and implementation support, a JBFC Production Book for each student and much more!

Our goals are to use the tools of the animator to help fourth grade students to:
• learn how to produce a short animated film.
• apply math and language arts skills to real life.
• practice their public speaking skills through group presentation.
• sharpen their ability to focus on a multifaceted project.
• conceptualize original characters and bring them to life.
• improve their ability to write imaginative stories.
• understand the art and the creation of animation.
• recognize animation as a potential career.

Animation: Minds in Motion! provides opportunities for fourth grade students to:
• examine how animators visually tell stories.
• energize their imaginations by using the tools of the animator.
• exercise their ability to creatively collaborate on a team.
• enjoy creating a unique world that tells a story.
• experience the life-changing thrill of seeing their film on the big screen in front of a real audience.
