About the Programs

Education is a central mission of the Jacob Burns Film Center. Working with our Educational Advisory Board, comprised of educators, critics, and other professionals in the film and media fields, the JBFC has developed education programs that aim to provide students of all ages with the skills necessary to thrive in a world increasingly dominated by the visual image.

The emergence and accessibility of new technologies are changing the modes of communication. Information is now primarily delivered through the visual images of Film, TV, and the internet. Traditional literacy skills of reading and writing are enhanced by the inclusion of visual and aural communication tools. It is imperative that students learn how to ‘read’ visual signs, as they do written forms, to decode meaning and purpose. Furthermore, they need to be given the tools of media production to effectively express their own ideas, stories, and experiences.

We believe that increasing students’ visual literacy will expand their view of their inner and outer worlds, help them become more effective communicators, critical thinkers, engaged participants in society and the global marketplace, and empower them to be life-long learners and empathetic citizens.

Groundbreaking education programs in film and visual literacy are offered for Grades 3 through 12. From its curriculum-based programs that support the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts and the English Language Arts to its after-school enrichment opportunities, the JBFC serves over 15,000 students every school year. Thanks to the generous support of corporations, foundations, individuals and members, 55% of these students are from underserved school districts and participate absolutely free of charge.
